Not Every Goodbye

Our weekends for the past few months have been busy. We’re busy either with work on the property or catching up with friends. However, in all the busyness, I feel a little pocket of emptiness. That pocket fits the size of a beautiful collie huntaway cross, Dell.

I miss him, and in extension, our previous dog Bobby. Our weekends used to revolve around places to go to with him or including him in our work around the property.

However, I’ve got to admit that his absence has opened up possibilities for us. Previously we have a set walking routing that ends with us having coffee, tea and a puppcino as a family. Now, we’re able to go on walks and visit places that used to be a bad fit for him.

Two Sundays ago, we went out for our usual walk and searched for a new place to explore that was not constrained by Dell. We drove to a point in Google Maps marked out as Maketu Waterfall. I did not have high hopes. It has not rained in quite a few days, water levels will be low and it will be a disappointment. In the end, there was abundant water but the waterfall became a side note. The star of the morning’s walk was Chris and I turning a poignant activity in our family schedule into something beautiful. We spent a wonderful time together exploring Drury South and then in a twist of serendipity, took a walk through the grounds of an old cemetery that led to a beautiful bush and a free flowing waterfall.
